Xfinity NOW: how does it work?
| Plan | Speed | Price |
|---|---|---|
| NOW Internet | 100 Mbps | US$30 a month |
| NOW Internet | 200 Mbps | US$45 a month |
- Included: unlimited data, a Wi-Fi router (refurbished gateway) and access to Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots around town.
- No contract or credit check. Xfinity advertises all-in pricing.
- Payment: autopay is required, by credit or debit card or bank account; prepaid cards are refused. We found no official rule on Canadian cards: place the order online before you leave to find out, and keep a plan B.
- Pause: stop the service when you leave in the spring and restart it next winter.
The steps
- Check your exact address, including the unit number, on Xfinity's NOW page.
- Order online (delivery) or visit an Xfinity store.
- Plug the gateway into the unit's active coax outlet (one outlet only), then activate it.
- Run a speed test, especially upload speed if you do video calls.
What if Xfinity doesn't serve your address?
Xfinity is present in several regions (the southeast, including Miami-Dade and Broward, the southwest, Jacksonville and the Panhandle), but not everywhere. Around Tampa and Orlando, the cable provider is often Spectrum. Ask the owner which provider serves the building, then choose:
- the rental's Wi-Fi, after a speed test;
- the local provider's plan, asking whether there's a no-contract option;
- your phone's hotspot as a stopgap.
Condo owners: don't pay for internet all summer
If you have a regular Xfinity account, the seasonal plan lets you suspend service for 2 to 6 months, once a year. You pay US$8 a month to suspend, or US$20 a month to keep 20 Mbps internet (handy for a camera or a thermostat). There are no installation fees when you come back.
Remote work: 4 checks
- Upload speed for video calls, tested on day one.
- A plan B: phone hotspot, café, library or coworking space.
- Hurricanes: outages are possible. During storm warnings, Comcast often opens its Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots to the public for free.
- Your employer: the VPN must work from the US. See also working remotely from Florida.
Key takeaways
- Xfinity NOW: US$30 (100 Mbps) or $45 (200 Mbps) a month, no contract, router included.
- You need an address connected to Xfinity; around Tampa and Orlando, it's often Spectrum.
- Autopay is required; test your card before you leave.
- Owners: suspend your internet over the summer with the seasonal plan.
