In short For a couple renting a one-bedroom apartment, expect about C$2,400 to C$4,500 a month depending on the city, before groceries and outings. Two traps push the bill up: the exchange rate (US$1 costs about C$1.42) and Florida's taxes on rentals of 6 months or less (6% state tax, plus the county surtax and tourist tax).

Taxes on rentals of 6 months or less

In Florida, a rental of 6 months or less is a "transient rental." It is subject to the state sales tax (6%), a county surtax and a county tourist tax (1 to 6%). Beyond 6 months with a written lease, these taxes do not apply. Ask whether the advertised price includes taxes.
